Victoria Whincup’s illustrations are striking for their simplicity, endearingly innocent, ethereal.
For me, viewing her work was like stepping into a fairytale, another world where reality and fantasy can be blurred, but in a really good way ~ the way it is in a child’s mind.
Hull-based Victoria designs wedding stationery but also other cards, prints and brooches.
Victoria says: “I love to draw the world around me. I am particularly inspired by the shapes of houses, stories, flowers, trees and birds.
“Recently I have found a new love for designing bespoke wedding stationery. My designs are all hand draw and painted, before being printed.
“I love listening to each customer’s ideas for their invitations and then turning them into designs.”
Victoria says she has always drawn and painted, but didn’t realise her passion could be a profession until she was 17. She studied fine art at college, then gained a First Class Honours Degree in Illustration at Cambridge School of Art in 2009.
She says: “I don’t like to create designs using a computer. My pencil is my tool and I think this gives a personal feel to the invites. I am a great lover of typography so all of the text is hand drawn.
“Colour is another factor. It’s often nice to subtly tie in the colour theme of the wedding, or the season perhaps. Most of the tones I use are quite muted, but I’m a fan of the odd splash of bright, vibrant colour here and there.”
I think you’ll enjoy taking a look for yourself.
