Tweed is one of those fabrics that can speak to you: steeped in history, it talks of tradition, toughness, time in the country and being toasty warm.

Of course, it has spread far from its rural beginnings and often graces catwalks. I was recently on the hunt for a tweed jacket and this vintage Max Mara number was the result.

Sally Green has a background in fashion buying but has now set up Tweed Lounge. Their pure woollen soft furnishings have given the fabric a thoroughly modern slant and the company is making a point of trying to support the tradition of wool production here in Yorkshire.

Sally said she thinks what sets Tweed Lounge apart is the fact that products are sourced, designed and handmade in Yorkshire using fabrics usually going to make clothing.

She says: “I have worked in the apparel industry for the last 20 years and with a passion for fashion and a flair for interior design, I merged the two! The result is Tweed Lounge.

“I love designing and developing new products and ranges. I appreciate good quality, beautiful fabrics and they always inspire me.

“Much of my career has been spent travelling, sourcing and buying from the Far East. I really love the fact that I am now not only working closer to home with British product, but with the finest quality Yorkshire-made fabrics.

“I am proud of my roots and feel that in some small way I’m helping to keep alive the skills associated with Yorkshire wool production. It’s our heritage, I feel we need to preserve it.”

Tweed Lounge also makes one-off bespoke pieces and has an interior design service including curtains, blinds and upholstery.

As well as soft furnishings, the company is producing some “quirky” scarves and corsages.

Sally will have a stand at the Living North Essence of Christmas Fair at York Racecourse on 16-18 November 2012. She is kindly offering our readers who visit the fair a 10% discount – just mention us!

All products are available to order through the website and prices start from £30.
